A little over a month ago, Siemens Energy participated in CERAWeek, a key forum for industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to engage in critical discussions about the future of energy. Each year, we ask our Siemens Energy participants to provide us with their key takeaways. We thought it would be interesting to compare what the key topics were in 2024 as compared with 2023. Here are the 7 topics that were even higher on the discussion agenda in 2024:

Unlocking the grid for the energy transition

Did you know that one of the biggest hurdles in our shift to renewable energy is upgrading the grid?💡 For every dollar we invest in renewable power, about $0.60 goes to grid and storage. That seems like a lot – but it's actually not enough. To avoid gridlock in our energy transition, we must match every dollar spent on renewables with a dollar on grid improvements or build-outs.

A year of high marks for sustainability

We did it again! As Siemens Energy, we’ve earned an ‘A’ score for our environmental transparency and action from the prestigious CDP rating – for the second consecutive year.

Out of 25,000 companies evaluated, we’re among the few with an 'A' rating. This demonstrates our unwavering commitment to drive sustainability and concrete action to fight the climate crisis. We stand by our responsibility to this planet and continue to set the bar high!

The view from Davos

I was thrilled to be at the World Economic Forum’s 55th Annual Meeting in Davos, themed “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.”

We’re navigating through some tricky geopolitical and geoeconomic currents. At the same time, mind-blowing innovations – also in the energy sector – hold both opportunities and uncertainties.

Given these powerful forces at play, how can we stop fragmentation? And instead, find more effective ways to work together? This year’s WEF25 participants are tackling these questions from several angles.

The power grid – bottleneck of the energy transition?

On our way towards a greener #energy landscape, we tend to forget the backbone of the #EnergyTransition: The power #grid. In order to avoid it becoming the bottleneck of the transition, we need to swiftly make it fit for tomorrow’s purpose. How? The need for permitting reform legislation

Today, Siemens Energy joined other industry leaders from across the energy value chain calling on the U.S. Congress to swiftly to pass comprehensive, bipartisan permitting legislation in a letter organised by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES).

The energy transition is dependent on a modernized and resilient grid. Increasing clarity on permitting timelines and processes will help new projects that enable the transition to come online faster. We look forward to continuing to work with policymakers as they debate this important issue.

Leadership Insights with the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center

The transmission grid is the backbone of the #EnergyTransition, and a key component within a reliable, resilient, and #sustainable energy system. I was delighted to speak to the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center about its importance – particularly in the U.S., where much of the grid needs to be upgraded and extended in the near future.

Together we can meet the challenges of the energy transition in the US

The previous week, I traveled to Washington, D.C., and had the privilege of meeting with numerous Members of Congress. It was an opportunity to discuss the issues concerning Siemens Energy and our more than 12,000 colleagues in the United States.

The U.S. is our largest single-country market. That means the policies made on Capitol Hill have a global impact on our company and customers. My main message to U.S. lawmakers on this trip: the #energytransition will not happen overnight. But for it to happen at all, the #partnership between the public and private sector must be strong. Industry needs a permitting process that provides certainty. We must enhance the reliability and resiliency of the #grid as more #renewables come online. And we need to build a pipeline of #skilledworkers that can power our sector for decades.

There is no green energy transition without transmission

Renewable power is the basis of the #energytransition to meet net zero. But its impact can only be realized if one vital element is in place: a robust grid network.

However, to accelerate the global energy transition, governments and business leaders need to work together to make #sustainability investible. Only if we improve the framework conditions and auction mechanisms, for example, will we create the conditions needed for a successful turnaround.

An increasingly delicate balancing act: the US grid and the energy transition

The fast transition to clean energy is crucial to our future. As I say in this article, it is also certain that to build a decarbonized energy landscape, we must work together to build a resilient grid as its reliable backbone. No one company, government or person can do it alone. We need to work together to manage the complex transformation of the energy landscape.

Thoughts from CERAweek 2025

Meeting the upcoming wave of power demand driven by energy transition, energy expansion and data centers will require a comprehensive combination of technologies. In the U.S., we are witnessing an unmistakable boom, which is why we are actively investing in expanding our factories.

The growth in demand is challenging to ramp up quickly enough as we work to modernize and expand. But we're up for the challenge! We're making significant investments in Siemens Energy throughout the U.S. such as: power transformers, switch gear, blade & vane casting and implementing tangible advancements like HVDC technology to ensure that power reaches where it is needed. We've also recently sold dozens of gas turbines in the US to help meet the extraordinary generation boom. And we're adding 1,500 jobs over the next 3 years to insure we have the people to help make, install, and service these critical products.

This year’s CERAWeek2025 reinforced the importance of partnership, collaboration, innovation, and a willingness to be flexible and resilient in our energy sector. It was energizing to be participating in these conversations at such an important time for the energy industry.

A day for innovation

At our Innovation Conference last week, held at our Innovation Center in Orlando, we highlighted the critical role innovation plays in advancing the energy expansion needed here in North America.

Clifford and his team showcased to many of our customers and partners technologies that can help accelerate industrial electrification, strengthen our grids, and more effectively manage carbon. We also provided live demonstrations, including our direct air capture (DAC) proof of concept project and electrical heaters.

A busy start to 2025

2025 is off to a busy start, including getting on the road again! This week’s stop – visiting the team and touring the process improvements at our Siemens Energy Blades and Vanes Tampa facility in Gibsonton, Florida.

It’s an exciting time here, where we’ll be expanding our footprint to help the U.S. meet the critical demand for more efficient power generation. We’ll be adding 61,000 square feet to our production capacity at the site, which currently spans 216,000 square feet and specializes in creating high-performance blades and vanes that enhance turbine efficiency. These components are critical in directing gas flow and converting energy into electricity, all while withstanding extreme conditions.

Investing in America

This is an exciting time to be in the energy industry, and the US is leading the way. That´s why it matters to Siemens Energy to invest in America!

Last week I took part in a Financial Times conversation. Let me share with you my main thoughts and actions we’re taking to thrive on this unique opportunity for our North American region to become a proving ground for the energy transition.

Enabling the energy transition in California

I´d like to share with you how partnering with our customers is key to shaping the energy future… both for today and tomorrow.

Consider a traditional power plant. Today, we can reduce emissions, increase efficiency and add Hydrogen capabilities just by making upgrades to existing technology.

Tomorrow, we can upgrade those existing assets, ultimately making it future proof.

The upgrades on this plant added the equivalent MW of an additional small power plant. This secures more reliable power generation for an energy-thirsty state like California.
